Stunningly woven these baskets are made in Uganda from the leaf of the raffia palm wrapped around long strips of banana leaf stems. These extra large baskets make a big design statement. Basket weaving is carried out from the woman’s home in between her other domestic duties. The knowledge on how to weave has been mostly passed down from generation to generation.
The baskets come from Uganda Crafts, a fair trade organisation working to create sustainable jobs for the disadvantaged in Uganda, particularly women, people with disabilities, widows, orphans and people living with HIV, thus improving their living standards. Uganda Crafts work to mobilise groups in the basics of craft production, book keeping and quality management.
