Carpets & Mats
Brighten up your home and your day. Here we focus on two very different styles of rugs/carpets. The magnificently coloured and worked chainstitch embroidery rugs from Kashmir and the luxurious pile of pure wool knotted carpets from Nepal. The chainstitch rugs are flat on the surface and work equally well as wallhangings or furniture throws. The knotted carpets are much heavier with a dense pile.
We particularly love our fair trade carpets and rugs and we love the people who make them for us. The knotted rugs are made in the workshops of Kumbeshwar Technical School in the Kathmandu Valley, theirs is a truly inspiring enterprise. Beautiful pure Tibetan wool is carded, spun, dyed and woven, all on site by local women who are trained and supported in this venture by Kumbeshwar. There is no child labour used in any of our carpet production, as a matter of fact Kumbeshwar provide free childcare & primary schooling to their workers children. The results are 100% pure wool ethical carpets that will last several lifetimes and have a truly positive impact on their creators and the local community. Talk to us about custom orders, we can arrange virtually any size, colour or pattern that you want.
The chainstitch rugs are made by village men in Kashmir, India. Embroidered between the cycles of harvest and sowing, the rugs provide much needed funds to supplement their agricultural income. This area of Kashmir has been particularly hard hit by territorial unrest, violence and the resultant downturn in tourism over recent years.
